The Good Egg of Gooseville is the second story in The Little House That Stood.
Plot[]
This segment starts with narration setting up the tale in Gooseville. Its Mayor, an egg named Humpty Dumpty, is a man who prefers to rest rather than help his neighbors. Due to the stress, his outer shell has been starting to crack. Humpty often dreams of going to a place where he can have a peaceful vacation. His fantasy's quickly interrupted by Baby Bear, a neighbor who's eager to let the Mayor know about his duties. Though Humpty tries to back out of doing favors, Baby Bear starts by telling him about Bo Peep's sheep escaping again. Compared to other days, however, they seem much more hyper. One of her sheep runs into Humpty, and he ends up riding it all across town. The sheep trips on a plate of burritos on the street, launching Humpty into the sky. He crashes into the Bear family house. Mama and Papa Bear complain about the next door neighbors causing a ruckus. Their next door neighbors being Mother Hubbard and her many children in her house shaped like a shoe. Humpty sneaks away to try to grab the sheep, only to run into Jumping Jack, who plans to jump over a candle stick with his pogo stick. He chases one of the sheep up a hill, running into Jack and Jill who have rolled down the hill.
The very sheep Humpty was chasing is found by a carrot girl named Goldilocks, who lived with Mother Hubbard. Humpty catches the sheep, startling Goldilocks to the point where she screams loudly. Her scream causes the crack on Humpty's shell to grow much larger. She then tells the Mayor that she would love to have porridge. He responds with just asking her neighbors, before the sheep he caught starts running again. The sheep make it to the pen. Dizzy and exhausted, Humpty returns to his house. His nap is quickly interrupted by Baby Bear and the rest of the town at his doorstep. Miss Muffet shares her complaint about a thorn in her tuffet, Mama Bear complains about her lawn, Jack needs help preparing for the decathlon, and Jack and Jill missing not finding their stapler in the well. All these complaints start to make the cracks grow even bigger. After he closes his door, Humpty then gets an idea. He sneaks out his window, and starts to make his way to his dream vacation. Baby Bear catches him before he leaves however, and wants help with his bug net. Humpty tells Baby Bear that he's going on vacation and doesn't need to help. He goes off, and Baby Bear sadly goes away.
Humpty goes to an elevator near the Great Wall that's run by a gourd who just works over there, sucking on a sucker. They get into the elevator, and Humpty quickly discovers that it's a manually-operated elevator. He turns the crank until they make it to the top. After getting out, Humpty is shocked to discover the place on top. The place he had envisioned, a fun environment with activities, a pool, and a bar, was just an empty resort. The bellhop shows Humpty the small print at the bottom of the flyer Humpty had been carrying, revealing that it's a "bring your own mariachis, lemonade, and tea" vacation. Though Humpty came unprepared for this scenario, his little help-himself vacation was peaceful.
Meanwhile in town, Baby Bear was doing his best to take the Mayor's place in helping the neighbors. Goldilocks is outside of her home, dreaming of a grand porridge dinner. Humpty's vacation, however, is being spent with him dumping water into the empty pool. His attention's brought to binoculars that show him what's happening in town. He sees Goldilocks' dinner going sourly as they only have two strings of spaghetti. However, she gets an idea to sneak into the Bears' house while they're gone to eat their porridge. After trying the ones that are too hot and too cold, she finds one that's just right. She then heads upstairs to sleep in the bed of Baby Bear. Humpty, while worried, reminds himself that he's got better things to do than helping his neighbors. When the bears return home, they find Goldilocks on Baby Bear's bed. After he jumps onto the bed, she wakes up screaming. Her scream not only free the bugs in Baby Bear's jar, but increase the cracks on Humpty's shell once again. The bugs escape, and greet Miss Muffet. Startled, she throws her curds into the air. The curds land on Jack and Jill, and they roll down the hill until they run into Jack. Jack falls onto his candle, and the stick flies onto the roof of Bo Peep's straw roof. The barn burns down, and the sheep escape once again. The sheep run off frightened until they ram into the Great Wall. The wall cracks, and Humpty falls off from the edge. He's trapped in the hole in the wall, and his crack is bigger than before.
The neighbors head toward the wall and start shifting blame on each other until the Bears finally point to Goldilocks who caused the scream in the first place. Guilty, she apologizes and walks off. The neighbors then immediately start complaining. Humpty then realizes that he's the one who's really at fault, and confesses to the town. They then start to accept their faults and start to help Humpty out of the crack in the wall. He's shot out of the wall and is thrown into the sky. He falls onto the street, but is caught by his neighbors. They then decide to set things right by apologizing to Goldilocks and giving her porridge from a giant pot. When he tries to get porridge from the pot, he falls in. After they get him out, they discover that the porridge helped seal the cracks on Humpty's shell. The town now start to do their best to help each other out, lending a little hand.
