Larry-Boy! and the Fib from Outer Space! is the eighth episode of VeggieTales and the first Larry-Boy episode.

Plot

Bob and Larry greet the kids with their usual greeting while on the Counter top before Bob asks who in the audience has a question for them to answer (revealing that he didn't have an actual plan for the show). Larry then says that he just remembered that he actually got an e-mail from this random boy by the name of Ezzio Vietti who hails from the modest city of Hackensack,in the glorious state of New Jersey. Bob is confused about the concept of e-mail (because at the time this video was released, e-mail was still a fairly new thing on the web, and so was the internet), which Larry tries to explain the whole concept of the internet to him. Bob then states that he got cable last month, before Larry replies rather condescendingly, "You are so early 90's," which briefly offends Bob. Larry moves away from the whole internet topic and goes on to explain that Ezzio said that he apparently just did something that was so bad that he knew he wasn't supposed to do, so now all of his buddies are actually pressuring him to be super dishonest about it with his folks at home so that he won't face any sort of punishment from them, and inquires what on earth should he do. Bob then notes that being dishonest can be a very hazardous thing, before asking if they have any stories about that. Larry replies that he has the story covered, stating that the exact same thing happened to Junior Asparagus once. But of course, Bob clearly does not remember what happened. Larry then tells Ezzio to grab his popcorn and turn down the lights so that he can get prepared for the story of..... "Larry-Boy! and the Fib From Outer Space!". Larry then says "Roll film!" before the lights turn off, leaving Bob in the dark (both figuratively and literally).

The story begins with Percy and his brother leaving a local Bumblyburg movie theater one evening discussing the film they just saw: "Invasion of the Cow Snatchers" and they see what appears to be a comet flying by in the sky. Jimmy and Jerry Gourd, who staff at an early-warning radar station, are complaining about seeing nothing for 2 years and wanting their old jobs back at Mr.Slushy. Soon the two decide to alert Larry-Boy of the approaching comet. Larry-boy's butler Alfred notices the signal and decides to alert his comrade about the signal. But, as soon as Larry sees the signal; he accidentally knocks Alfred over. Larry boy then says: "No time now, Alfred. Duty calls!" Alfred then says: "I've fallen and I cant get up." Larry-boy then starts up the Larry-mobile and drives off into the night. In the night sky, we get the title.Then, we see that the comet is really a blue alien as it landed in a Junior's neighborhood and it just so happens to go to Junior's place. The scene then shifts to daytime as Junior Asparagus and his buddy Laura Carrot are having a tea party at Junior's abode. Junior decides to utilize his father's "Art Bigoti" limited edition collector's plate for Mr. Snuggly because he had nothing to eat off of. Laura is a bit reluctant, but Junior says that since Mr. Snuggly is a very special bear; he deserves a special plate. While trying to retrieve it, the shelf tips and the plate breaks. Laura then flees the crime scene. The tennis ball-sized alien "Fibrillus Minimus" (or Fib, for short) emerges from behind Mr. Snuggly and convinces Junior to lie to his dad claiming that, "A little fib couldn't hurt anybody." Junior's a tad bit reluctant. But, when his dad soon comes in and asks Junior how his day was, Fib hides. He then sees the broken plate and asks his son what on earth happened to it. Junior then lies and says that it was Laura. And how she wanted to show off her new apple chopper which worked splendidly but it somehow shattered the plate in the process. Junior's dad buys the lie and decides to call Laura's dad and talk to him about what happened. Fib comes out of hiding and congratulates Junior although Junior notices that Fib looks a bit bigger. Fib shakes this comment of and then the two of them leave the crime scene unpunished. Larry-Boy begins to search for the alien but passes him; but not before greeting Junior and Fib (LarryBoy thinks Fib is a Blueberry). Junior is then confronted by his buddy Percy. Fib then goes and hides in an alleyway. Percy then tells Junior about the situation with the plate and proceeds to ask for the truth because he's very perplexed at this point. And pretty soon, Junior decides to pin it on Laura's brother Lenny. Junior the says that Lenny had broke the plate because he was naughty and he supposedly gave it to a crocodile to chew it up all because he "hates" Art Bigotti. Like Junior's father, Percy buys the story and leaves him be. Junior than tells Fib that it worked again. Only now, Fib has now grown and has gotten feet. Larry Boy then reports to Alfred that he has found no extraterrestrial life in Bumblyburg and is therefore heading back to the Larry-Cave because he has been driving around in the Larry-mobile all day. Not to mention, he's tired/hungry and in desperate need of a bathroom. Also, the super suit is very constricting. Then, the Larry-mobile just passes by fib again. Later that evening, Junior and Fib are still out, but are confronted by Laura, Percy, and Lenny who have formed a miniature angry mob and confront him about his lies. When Junior tells a lie about aliens snatching these cows, swapping brains with the cows and the cows with the alien brains coming to earth and breaking the plate (which was literally the plot of the movie Percy and his little brother saw at the beginning of the show), Fib grows to be a massive giant with hands who has swapped out his friendly demeanor for a pretty nasty one and holds Junior captive and pretty soon, Fib starts causing misery and mayhem all over Bumblyburg by destroying stuff.

Back at HQ, Larry is engaged in a game of Candy-Land with Alfred. Unfortunately for Larry, he's been stuck in the molasses swamp for 38 consecutive turns, while Alfred gets to see Princess Lolly. Larry pulls another card but he's still stuck. He then sarcastically says "I sure hope the rest of Bumblyburg is having a better day than I am." Larry then sees the destruction; as does Alfred. Larry then tells his butler that he's got work to do and to consider their game....postponed. Alfred looks and agrees. We then see Fib continuing to pulverize everything. Junior asks him why is he doing this to him, as he thought Fib was his buddy. Fib then explains that this is the thing that happens with fibs: they grow! & now that Fib is big, it's his turn to call the shots and now Junior belongs to him. Larry-boy shows up and remarks: "Not so fast, Monster!" Fib turns and notices Larry-Boy in the Larry-Mobile. Percy then says that if anyone can stop Fib, it's definitely Larry-boy. Larry-boy commands Fib to drop Junior. But, Fib taunts him. Soon, Larry-boy decides to pursue Fib with Junior in his grasp via the Larry-Mobile as the Fib tries to escape by climbing to the top of the Bumblyburg Water Tower. Larry-Boy learns that Alfred made some modifications to his vehicle. Alfred then tells him to press the green and blue buttons, but those activate the horn and wipers respectively. Alfred then reveals that it's the yellow one and soon the Larry-Mobile is turned into the Larry-plane and flies into the sky. After learning the fact that the Larry-plane is unarmed because Alfred didn't bother making weapons at all, Larry-boy then tells Alfred that he's gonna have to eject. He tries to somehow tackle the Fib like a missile but he is grabbed at the last second and he is squeezed until one of his plungers pops out! Larry-boy then asks Alfred what he can do to stop Fib. Alfred then tells Larry-Boy that according to his calculations, he can do...absolutely nothing! Larry-Boy then annoyingly asks Alfred why he didn't tell him before he tried to tackle Fib. Alfred says that his calculations were not finished at the time. Fib then tells Junior that even the smallest bit of dishonesty gets massive fast. And a huge chunk of it can swallow someone up. He then tells Junior that his dishonesty was massive. Alfred then makes a discovery. Although Larry-Boy can do nothing to stop the Fib, there is someone else who can. Fib then inquires: "Now, which one of you guys should I eat first?" Larry-Boy then says that they're running short on time. Alfred tells Larry-Boy that his computer is still thinking. Soon the Fib chooses to eat Larry-Boy because he "sort of looks like candy." Larry-Boy tries to tell him that it's spandex & it is quite bitter. Alfred then gets a reading. Just when Larry-Boy is about to get eaten, Alfred's computer get unplugs and unfortunately for him; he doesn't know who can stop Fib. But, fortunately he plugs it back in. But alas, he has to wait for it to reboot. Just when it seems like Larry-Boy is doomed, Alfred informs him that Junior is the only one who can stop the Fib. Junior thinks for a second on what he can do to stop Fib and before he knows it, he realizes he has to tell the truth. Junior then confesses to his parents (who were watching from below) that he broke the plate. Fib then spits out Larry Boy. And as Junior confesses about those lies about his buddies Laura and Lenny; and admitting that it was all his fault, the Fib shrinks until he's just nothing. Junior then gets down from the water tower via Larry-Boy's other plunger ear and finally ate humble pie to his dad about the damaged plate. Dad tells him that he's sure it was nothing more than an accident. He just wished that Junior could've told him from the beginning. Junior then explains that he thought that Dad would get very pissed off with him by fessing up the truth. But Dad tells Junior that he is worth more to him than some bowling plate. Junior then inquires if he should be punished, but his parents come to a consensus that he can skip the punishment, but only if he promises to tell them the truth from that point on.Junior agrees by hugging his dad. Officer Scooter then gets all emotional and he even tried to thank Larry-boy, but he had already left. We then see Larry-Boy making the missing piece of the Larry-Signal for dramatic purposes. Later that evening, a red version of Fib falls into Junior's neighborhood, possibly looking for someone else to help it grow as it heads off in the opposite direction of Junior's house....

Back on the Counter-top, Bob congratulates Larry, now in his Larry-Boy costume, for doing a good job. Larry thanks Bob before saying that he has a meeting with the action figure people in 10 minutes. When Bob questions this, Larry says, "Larry-Boy mania is sweeping the nation. If you're not on board, you're gonna miss the train." Bob had no idea about this. Larry then says "Now you do." Bob then says that he and Larry are over by Qwerty to talk about what they've learned today, before Qwerty once again plays the "What Have We Learned" song. Bob hops off to turn it off, but Larry uses his Super-Suction Ear to pull Bob back. When this happens, Larry claims he likes the song and has Bob let it play. After the song ends and Larry retracting his Super-Suction Ear again, Bob then explains that Junior thought that the best way to get out of conflict with his mom and dad was to be super dishonest. Larry then adds that Junior had to keep on being super dishonest to cover up for the first bit of dishonesty until he was trapped and was essentially a slave to his dishonesty. Qwerty then brings up a bible verse, which is "The truth will set you free." from the book of John. Also, this is a part of the 8th chapter and a part of the 32nd verse. Bob then explains to Ezzio that the only way for all of us to truly be free is to be totally honest. & while he still might get into some pretty hot water for whatever awful crime he committed, him facing the music and telling his folks about whatever the terrible crime he did was is certainly a lot less painful than getting stuck in a massive chunk of dishonesty. Larry then agrees before telling Bob that they need to clear the stage because it's time for the world premiere of his new music video. We are then treated to the premiere of The Larry-Boy Theme Song.

Production

After the production for episodes two and three were done, Phil wanted to do a Tim Burton Batman parody episode. Originally, it was going to be Bat-Bob and the concept was that he tends to be serious. But he also wanted to add Larry as his sidekick, so he created a character named Larry-Boy, who attends to be the funny one. During Dave and the Giant Pickle, Larry role-played Larry-Boy and both fans and crew actually like the character so much, Phil decided to let Larry-Boy be the main hero. As a result, Bat-Bob never fell through, but Bob later became a hero named Thingamabob in The League of Incredible Vegetables, which came out fifteen years later.

  • Telling the truth to your folks when you've done something pretty bad is always the best policy.
  • Don't live off a huge chunk of dishonesty, otherwise you'll find yourself in hot water sooner or later.

Explanations

  • HTML (Hypertext Markup Language) is a markup language to create web pages.
  • As you'll notice during the Fib scenes, he crushes every vehicle except for the Volkswagen van. That is because Ron Smith modeled it, which is an exact one that he owned and refused to destroy it (even in a piece of media).
  • "Call the shots" means to take the initiative in deciding how something should be done.

Trivia

  • This was the first episode for several things:
    • The first episode where Bob and Larry receive e-mail messages from kids.
    • The first appearance of Art Bigotti. However, he only appears pictured on the bowling plate, and would not appear in person until Lyle the Kindly Viking where he is seen in Larry's High Silk Hat.
    • The first episode where both Junior and Laura get into a conflict, although there was no apology Laura, Lenny and Percy received from the person who accused her of his own wrongdoing in this one.
    • The first episode where the animated Big Idea logo from 1997 is used.
    • The first episode to feature a much bigger crew, consisting of Joseph Sapulich, Daniel López Muñoz, and Joe McFadden. It's also the first episode with more crew members like Aaron Hartline, Cara Bukovski, Lena Spoke, Nathan Tungseth, Jennifer Combs, and Jon Gadsby.
    • This is also the first episode to have a lighting department.
    • This is the first episode to feature a much bigger musical score than the previous episodes.
    • The first episode after their debuts where none of The Pirates Who Don't Do Anything or the French Peas appear.
    • The first episode where Mr. Nezzer appears without Mr. Lunt.
    • The only episode where Bob and Larry don't say the normal closing signature sign-off message, "Remember kids, God made you special and he loves you very much!" as the LarryBoy music video at the end replaced it.   • This is the only Larry-Boy episode that Frankencelery, Scallion #2, Pa Grape, Ma Grape, Tom Grape, Rosie Grape, The Blue Wind-Up Lobster, and The Peach appear in.
  • This is also the only Larry-Boy episode to use the VeggieTales logo and intro used from 1993 to 1997.
  • This is also the only Larry-Boy episode to use the Palatino font for the end credits.
  • This is the only episode where Tom Grape and The Peach don't speak.
  • This marks The Blue Wind-Up Lobster and Rosie Grape's last appearances to date.
  • There were a few differences between pre-production and the final version:
    • The beginning was going to have Larry-Boy stopping a burglar, but was cut due to time constraints. This was, however, carried over in the next Larry-Boy episode.
    • Concept art shows Alfred with a motorcycle.
    • The shot of Dad from Junior's perspective was going to be upside down.
    • In the script, the closing credits were going to have a character hopping through the black background, but this never fell through in the final version.
  • When this episode aired on Qubo, the scene of Larry-Boy saying he's tired of searching was cut.
  • There is a rare teaser of this episode that's featured on the original 1997 Very Silly Songs! (originally "A Very Silly Sing-Along!") VHS copy. This makes it the first VeggieTales video to have a trailer made for it.
  • This is the second episode not to have a Silly Song.
  • According to Phil Vischer and Mike Nawrocki on the DVD commentary, they received a few angry letters for this episode on several subjects:
    • Larry insulted Bob at the beginning, despite no direct response from him.
    • Larry was way too serious in this episode.
    • This episode was a bit controversial as it was too intense for some kids.
    • It was wrong for Mike Asparagus to faint twice in the water tower scene. They were originally going to make Lisa Asparagus faint but it was changed to Mike because it would be deemed stereotypical of a woman to faint in a bad situation and they thought it would be funnier if it was the other way around.
  • This episode was featured as a bonus feature on a re-release of The Ballad of Little Joe.
  • This is the only Larry-Boy episode with the countertop segments rendered in SoftImage.
  • The classroom edition of this episode has the original Sonny Bono version of Love My Lips.
  • The burger and milkshake are seen from the song "His Cheeseburger"
  • Almost all international dubs except for Arabic and Taiwanese Mandarin cut the Larry-Boy Theme Song and put an instrumental of the theme song in the credits.

Remarks

  • The back cover shows an image of the Fib smiling when he's about to eat Larry-Boy, which never occurred in the episode. The shot was either an alternative take or was edited for marketing.
  • Bob saying he fails to remember the story is quite odd, considering he makes cameo near when Junior is about to tell the truth.
  • It's unknown how the Fib got into Junior's house. Although it is possible that he came in as Laura was fleeing the crime scene.
  • The Fib is really small when it lands, but why is it able to be seen from so far away, with the exception of the Gourds' screen?
  • The Peach is either standing or sitting, but he's in the middle of the road while Larry-Boy is searching for the supposed alien. One can only hope he got out of the road in time before being run over by a car.
  • Alfred's research reveals the Fib is a monster called a "lie." Even with the magic of 1997 Internet, what kind of research did Alfred do to learn this? Apparently, no one except the Internet knows anything about the Lie for some reason.
  • The Fib mysteriously gains lips while sucking on Larry-Boy.
  • Lisa Asparagus calls her husband "Dad." This may have been done likely because neither of Junior's parents had names at the time of this video's creation.
  • Junior's house looks like it is a bungalow, yet it has stairs.
  • Larry says he's been stuck in the Molasses Swamp for 39 consecutive turns, which is unrealistic since he would've been out by that point.
  • Officer Scooter doesn't drive away but instead chooses to flee on foot when the Fib is near him. It'd be just as easy to flee from the Fib on wheels.
  • The horn is where the gear shift should be.
  • The red Fib landing on the street is essentially Fib landing the start. Except this time, the fib is red and it is flipped.
  • It is unknown how Larry-Boy got his plunger ear back after Junior ate humble pie to his father about the damaged plate.
  • The preview menu on the DVD edition has a preview for the next episode.
  • In the DVD-ROM section, it shows pictures from Dave and the Giant Pickle, Madame Blueberry, and Jonah: A VeggieTales Movie.

Goofs

  • Some animation errors are seen when Larry-Boy is searching for the alien.
    • Scallions 2 and 3 are sliding in place, and 3 is standing on the fire hydrant.
    • The wind-up lobster is hovering.
  • Dad Asparagus' broken bowling plate appears and disappears randomly between shots.
  • Something flashes after Alfred say "What do you mean, you can't find it?"
  • Alfred's bow-tie floats in some shots.
  • Larry-Boy's straps are missing in the shot where he tells Alfred he never found the Fib.
  • As Larry and Alfred are playing Candy Land, Alfred appears to be holding down his card in a way it's clipping into Larry.
  • There is no glass in the window behind Larry and Alfred when they are playing Candy Land, which was acknowledged by Phil and Mike on the commentary.
  • Junior says that Fib has got legs. They're actually feet.
  • Part of the police car flashes after the Fib steps on it.
  • Percy's mouth gets scrambled with a question mark on it for one frame after Larry-Boy arrives to stop Fib.
  • After the wipers pop out, the background freezes for a split-second.
  • When the Fib tells Junior he made a big lie, the background is black.
  • Larry-Boy is missing his tooth when the Fib is about to eat him.
  • The yellow part of Larry-Boy's costume clips through his body after Alfred's computer shuts off.
  • The cow from the billboard that the Fib destroys suddenly disappears after it passes by Scooter's police car.
  • As Alfred is about to reveal who can stop the Fib before he unplugs the computer, his monocle somewhat clips into his nose.
  • Bob is shown without Qwerty behind him but appears in front of him in the next shot.
  • Qwerty's verse background is still on his screen even when he's done displaying the verse.

  • A few nods from Are You My Neighbor? are referred to in the episode:
    • Jimmy saying they've been searching for space aliens for two years, which was when the video was released.
    • Mention of Mr. Slushy.
    • Scooter was listening to I Can Be Your Friend, which appeared in his debut episode.
  • Larry states he's been stuck for 38 turns.
  • Larry's bathrobe is just a recolor of Goliath's robe.
  • "I'm a Cucumber Records" is most likely a reference to Larry's quote whenever someone mistakes him for a pickle.
  • When Junior says, "Who said that?", which is likely a reference to The Toy That Saved Christmas, his television from the first show can be seen.
  • As the giant garage door for the Larry-Mobile to be let out opens up, the fence it contains was previously used in The Toy That Saved Christmas.

Real-World References

  • This episode is mainly intended to be a spoof of Tim Burton's Batman film released in 1989.
  • The game Larry and Alfred were playing is Candy Land. The Molasses Swamp is an area that the player can get stuck on if they land on a black dot.
  • The Fib climbing the water tower and holding a small figure is a reference to the climax of King Kong.
  • Jerry, in the laboratory scene, can be seen wearing Spock ears. Spock is a fictional character from the 1960s Sci-Fi television series, Star Trek.
  • When Larry-Boy accidentally knocks Alfred over, Alfred says "I've fallen, and I can't get up." This is a reference to a television commercial that ran in 1987 for a medical alarm and protection company called Life Call, now called Life-Alert.
  • The song the Larry-Mobile was honking was "Dixie Land."
