- "Jonah: Alright, I admit it. It's my fault, all my fault! I'm the one to blame!
Pa Grape: But I... The-the worm...
I'm a Hebrew and I worship the Lord, the God of heaven who made the sea and the land, and I'm running away from! He told me to go to Nineveh, but I didn't listen! You know, I don't like those people.
Mr. Lunt: Ooh, fish slappers!
Jonah: Yes! And so I ran! I ran and I've been up here, and now everyone's in terrible danger all because of me! I'm afraid the only thing left is to be thrown into the sea.
Larry: Aw, you don't have to do that. We've got a plank. you can just wlk off!
Jonah: Yes. Thank you. You're too kind" - — Jonah to The Pirates Who Don't Do Anything
Jonah (also known as Jonas, Ionas and Yunis) is a prophet who delivers God's messages around the Middle East and the son of Amittai. He is also the titular protagonist of Jonah: A VeggieTales Movie. He is played by Archibald Asparagus. He is also the fifth of the twelve minor prophets, the other eleven being Hosea (1), Joel (2), Amos (3), Obadiah (4), Micah (6), Nahum (7), Habakkuk (8), Zephaniah (9), Haggai (10), Zechariah (11), and Malachi (12).
Bio
Jonah was born in 823 BC in the Kingdom of Northern Israel.
In his initial appearance, Jonah tells the people of Joppa a message from God about encouragement (eg. be nice, don't eat nasty things, etc.). One night, however, his lord tells him that he must go to Nineveh to tell the people there to stop their mean and violent ways. Jonah never really liked the Ninevites, so he decided not to obey God, and decides to run away from Him. He plans on going to Tarshish with the help of the Pirates Who Don't Do Anything. Jonah then meets Khalil at the bottom of the ship. But God knew Jonah was on the pirate ship and caused a storm. Captain Pa decide to do a game of Go Fish to find out who God is upset with and caused the storm. When Jonah lost the game, he reveals to the pirates that he was a Hebrew who worshipped God, but he ran away from Him when He told him to go to Nineveh. Soon, Jonah was forced walked the plank. When he was thrown into the sea, the storm stopped. The pirates decided pull Jonah back to the boat but he began screaming in fear as a giant whale was slowly coming towards him and swallowed him whole. Jonah [along with Khalil] were the whale's belly, knowing that he was going to die for sure. Just then, God's angels appeared and told Jonah that God will give him a second chance if he atones for his sins. Jonah prayed inside the whale for three days and nights before being vomited out by the whale. Jonah, Khalil, Reginald and even The Pirates Who Don't Do Anything came to Nineveh, there Jonah gave the message and the people said they were sorry, stopped the fish slapping and started being nice people. But Jonah still want to see Nineveh get destroyed, thinking God wouldn't really forgive the Ninevites. Even now, God was still passionate to Jonah that He even made Jonah a weed to shade him from the hot sun. Jonah tells God to destroy Nineveh while he waits under his weed, before Khalil eats the weed. Jonah is angered and upset at how Khalil ate the weed, and this annoys Khalil who try to explain how God can forgive anyone and wants everyone to give a second chance only for Jonah to wish he was dead. Having enough of this, Khalil and even Reginald leave Jonah to presumably die in the wildness alone.
Development
When finding out who Jonah would be, the team though that Archibald shouldn't be Jonah since he wasn't deemed as a main character in the series. Larry was considered but was scrapped because he doesn't get serious, Bob was then a consideration since he's serious but since the story of Jonah ends with Jonah not learning that the team didn't feel right about Bob not learning anything. At one point, Junior was even considered which didn't make sense at all. Finally, Jimmy was considered but was scrapped because of how his voice sounds. At the end, the team had no choice but to go with Archibald.
